Roulette Basics and Types of Roulette Bets

Roulette is a game of chance played in casinos. The name "roulette" derives from a French term meaning a small wheel.

To play Roulette, a ball is tossed into a wheel that spins and has numbered pockets on it. As the wheel slows down, the ball settles into any one of the numbered pockets. A Roulette wheel has colored pockets numbered 1-36 plus 0. American Roulette has a second 00 as well for a total of 38 pockets. The goal is to bet correctly on which pocket the ball will fall.

In Roulette, there is a separate board of numbers for wagering. The numbers 1-36 are arranged on a 3 x 12 scheme; besides this there are areas for the zeroes, odd and even, black and red, high and low, upper half numbers (19-36), lower half numbers (1-18); and first, second and third group of twelve numbers.

A betting chip is placed on the board to indicate your bet. There are lots of ways you can bet in Roulette. You don't have to wager on just one number. You can bet on a group of numbers, or on odd or even.

The types of Roulette bets are as follows:

ROULETTE INSIDE BETS

STRAIGHT. Straight means you bet on just one number like 2, 17, 35 and so on. The chip is put exactly inside the number's square.

SPLIT. A bet on two numbers side by side on the board, either horizontally or vertically. They are sequenced numbers only if horizontal like 16 and 17. If vertical, they are not, like 22 and 25. The chip is laid on the line between them.

STREET. A bet on one horizontal line, which consists of three sequenced numbers, e.g. 10, 11 and 12. The chip is laid on the side of the line.

CORNER. Two numbers in row and the two numbers directly below them in the next row, e.g. 29, 30, 32 and 33. The chip is laid on the point of intersection (the cross).

SIXLINE. A sixline bet in Roulette is to wager on two adjoining street lines. The chip is placed on the middle line outside, the intersection.

ROULETTE OUTSIDE BETS.

EVEN. An even money bet is a wager on a group of eighteen numbers. There are different groups of 18 in Roulette: black, red, low, high, odd and numbers. If you want to bet on only the black-colored pockets, the chip will be placed on the space for black.

GROUP. Numbers 1-36 can be divided by 12. A group is one of these three groups, e.g. 13-24.

COLUMN. If a street is a bet on an entire horizontal line, a column is a bet on an entire vertical line. The chip is laid at the bottom of the column below the last number.

Roulette is said to be one of those casino games that you can't just win; the house advantage is impossible to overcome. Statistics speak for themselves. Yet this does not gamblers from playing the game.
